Walking in Europe

A blog of Angus and Alison's walking tour of the Tour de Mont Blanc, Via degli Dei the Dobratsch Circuit in Carinthia, Austria, the Dolomites, Venice, and Iceland

Quick post August 11

This morning we were back out by 7:30 walking due South along the VdD starting on the main road then following the trail up along a forest edge on one side and rolling field on the other. We had a short day of about 10 kms today expecting heat again, but pleasantly rewarded with most of the walk under tree canopy along a ridge but views East and West. A highlight was a walk through a very old chestnut tree forest tended likely for centuries and currently coppiced from what looked like ancient stumps. We walked on past Monte Poggio Santa Croce (937m) and then followed the ridge for several kms through farmland. Chestnuts are a symbolic and traditional food of the Apennines and tonight we had a traditional chestnut flour crepe with a sausage and omelette as one of the courses at our Rifugio.

The descent into Madonna dei Fornelli was nice and gradual and we were able to meet our 1 pm off the trail goal today. A nice afternoon in the garden of the B&B Romani and a very traditional shared table meal with the other walkers and VdD pilgrims tonight.

Sun’s already up!

More stunning scenes. You really are seeing the sights and getting to know the people along the way. Chestnut flour crepes and sausage for breakfast sounds heavenly! The sunset photo with Ali is gorgeous. I’m really impressed there is such a pretty dress and matching shoes in her pack! Lots of love. Joc xo

Thanks Di! Glad you’re enjoying my meanderings! I’ll get something up tomorrow. 20 kms today in 30C temps but with most of the trail in shade. In Santa’ Agata tonight so technically now on the Tuscany side 🥾❤️ xo.
