Walking in Europe

A blog of Angus and Alison's walking tour of the Tour de Mont Blanc, Via degli Dei the Dobratsch Circuit in Carinthia, Austria, the Dolomites, Venice, and Iceland

A spectacular day today with a slow steady climb swinging NE out of Les Chapieux up a steep sided valley through farmland and eventually a series of switchbacks, up up to the Col de la Seigne at 2518m elevation and the border between France and Italy. The weather was pretty much everything. Started out beautiful sun and patchy clouds, then started to cool and close in so that lunch was curtailed (how fast can you down a cheese and ham baguette?) again and the rest of the climb and descent was in intermittent wet blasts coming off the glaciers. But beautiful beyond description: glaciers peaking out from the clouds and mist scudding by. And dramatic. We are on the East side of the Mont Blanc glacier complex and the peaks are everywhere. Our descent to Rifugio Elisabetta was wet and cold, but we are booked in for the night in two hostel bunks and half board- dinner and tomorrow’s breakfast included. Hot showers at 2 Euros each. I’ve had a cappuccino and Ali a cup of tea. We are warm, dry, tired, inspired… ready for a pre dinner nap.

Dear Angus and Alison! Thank you for the amazing photos and your descriptions of the adventure so far. What a lot of weather, scenery, more weather, even more beautiful scenery you have had. Nice to meet others along the way and to compare notes. I bet those beds, showers and cooked meals were much deserved. And the photo of the phone charging station is one for the ages! By now you are in to your next refugio. Much love to you both. Joc xoxo

Thanks Joc! Nice to get a note from just before bed Italy time. Tonight we are camped (yes back in the tent!) just outside of Courmayeur. I will post later but we had a beautiful walk from Elisabetta over ridge line into Courmayeur. Took us most of the day but we shaved off the last 2kms of straight downhill by taking a gondola! Saving the knees for tomorrow! More in a post to come 🙂 xo
