Longer post about September 13…up early to a picnic breakfast of amazing pastries and great coffee across from the hotel and along the banks of the Meurthe River. We were joined by local cycling enthusiasts, Marie Francois, Denis and Yves (also a history buff!). An initial climb out of the town to the north east brought to us the memorial at Le Fontanelle. A very moving memorial graveyard and interpretive trail through old trenches. Grave markers show the hundreds killed in a period of less than two months with little change to outcome of the respective positions. Such a terrible waste.

We continued down the hill to Raon L’Etape and on to Baccarat for lunch and a tour of the cathedral. The cathedral stands out as it is a rebuilt version of the one that had been destroyed in world war 2.

From Baccarat northwest into Luneville for the night. Luneville is beautiful. The centre of town is ancient with a massive Chateau that is now a park, but was the palatial centre of the Duchy of Lorraine.
