Walking in Europe

A blog of Angus and Alison's walking tour of the Tour de Mont Blanc, Via degli Dei the Dobratsch Circuit in Carinthia, Austria, the Dolomites, Venice, and Iceland

Today was a combination of fabulous scenery, landscapes and villages, distance and elevation gain (105 kms, and about 1600m vertical), and solemn and moving historical sites relevant to the Via Sacra.. legs are bit spent tonight, but the heart is full…

We started today in Guebwiller with an early start and a lovely ride through the vineyards of the Alsace (and the Rue de Vin), then an ever steepening climb and tight switchback after tight switchback through Eguisheim, Munster, Hohrod, Le Bonhomme, and the wonderful Linge memorial at the summit of the pass where remnants of the mountain trenches sometimes were within metres of each other). Particularly moving for me were the two cemeteries, less than a kilometre apart with so many grave markers and all so young and who died very near where they were buried.

A long and fast downhill ride placed us in Saint Die-Des-Vosges on the western slopes of the Vosges.

Angus such amazing beautiful photos and even though I am many kms away, they invoke a sense of reverence and awe of what our WW1 family members and their comrades must have seen – their days would have been marked by endurance of another kind. I am very impressed by the elevation gains and km’s you attain every day. Stay hydrated and keep those Eatmore bars close at hand! xo
